Cape Peron Birds

The tern has caught a fish...which he dropped about 3 seconds later. It's a sizable fish, so I don't know exactly how he planned to swallow it. It's possibly that conundrum led to the loss.

Despite not having a crest, the best ID I can make of the tern from the Western Australian bird book is the Greater Crested Tern, Thalasseus bergii. The pale yellow beak, black legs, and the gap between the crown and beak all seem to indicate this. I'm not clear if the crest only occurs in the mating season.

This and following photos - Australian Pied Cormorant, Phalacrocorax various subsp hypoleucos.
